MacroMentor vs. calculator.net vs. TDEE Calculators: How the Numbers Differ, and Why

Type your age, height, and weight into three different TDEE calculator tools and you can walk away with three different numbers, sometimes a few hundred calories apart. That's not a bug in any of them. Each tool is making a different bet about which equation fits your body, and a macro calculator is only as good as that bet. MacroMentor, calculator.net, and tdeecalculator.net all draw from the same handful of published formulas. Where they diverge is which one they reach for, and how much they tell you about the choice.
Why the same person gets different numbers
The formula doing the heavy lifting in most of these tools is the Mifflin-St Jeor equation, published in 1990 by Mifflin and colleagues in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition. They measured resting energy expenditure in 498 healthy adults with indirect calorimetry and built the equation off actual data, not a hunch. It replaced the older Harris-Benedict formula from 1919, which that same 1990 paper showed overestimated measured resting energy expenditure by about 5% in their sample. A follow-up systematic review by Frankenfield, Roth-Yousey, and Compher in 2005 backed this up: across both lean and obese adults, Mifflin-St Jeor predicted resting metabolic rate within 10% of measured values more often than the alternatives, with the narrowest error range of the equations they tested.
That's the formula MacroMentor defaults to when no body-fat percentage is entered. Add one, though, and things branch. Tell it you also train at an intermediate or advanced level, and it switches to the Cunningham equation: 500 plus 22 times lean body mass, a formula that traces back to Cunningham's 1980 reanalysis of resting metabolism data. A 2023 systematic review and meta-analysis in Sports Medicine tested roughly 100 RMR prediction equations against measured values in athletes and found Cunningham's predictions held up: it was one of only five equations whose average output didn't differ significantly from measured resting metabolic rate. That matters in athletic populations, where total body weight is a weak stand-in for how much metabolically active tissue a person is carrying. Enter body fat without the training history and MacroMentor lands on Katch-McArdle instead, built on the same logic: muscle and organs burn calories at rest, fat mostly doesn't, so anchoring the formula to lean mass should track better for anyone whose composition doesn't match their weight.
Is the calculator.net TDEE calculator accurate?
Depends which page you land on, and that's worth knowing before trusting the output. Their dedicated TDEE calculator offers Mifflin-St Jeor and Katch-McArdle, which is a reasonable pair, but it doesn't show its work: you get a final number, not the equations behind it, and there's no mention of a calorie floor if your target lands low. Their separate Calorie Calculator page is a different tool entirely: it shows three formulas including the revised 1984 Harris-Benedict, spells out the actual equations on the page, and cites a floor, pointing to Harvard Health guidance of roughly 1,200 calories a day for women and 1,500 for men unless a doctor is supervising something lower. Same site, two calculators, two different levels of candor. If someone says the calculator.net TDEE calculator is accurate, worth asking which one they mean.
tdeecalculator.net runs something similar: Mifflin-St Jeor by default, switching to Katch-McArdle once body fat is entered, plus a Harris-Benedict figure shown alongside for comparison. Their own copy calls Katch-McArdle "the most accurate formula of all," which reads more like marketing than citation. Neither of these tools appears to tie a calorie-floor warning to the specific number they just gave you the way MacroMentor does. MacroMentor still shows a target below 1,200 calories for women or 1,500 for men if that's what the inputs produce, but it flags it: a warning appears telling you to pick a gentler rate or work with a professional rather than run with a very low intake unsupervised.
The one adjustment worth being upfront about
MacroMentor also applies a small ancestry-based nudge to the Mifflin-St Jeor result: a downward correction of 4 to 5% for South Asian, East Asian, and Black or African descent, and nothing at all for anyone else. The underlying idea has real roots. Researchers have documented measurable differences in resting energy expenditure across populations, generally traced to organ size and fat-free mass distribution rather than ancestry on its own. A 2008 study by Wouters-Adriaens and Westerterp in the journal Obesity found lower resting energy expenditure in Asian participants that disappeared once fat-free mass was accounted for, and a 2002 study by Sharp and colleagues in Obesity Research found resting metabolic rate roughly 5% lower in African-American adults than in white adults, the basis for that group's correction. Every adjustment points the same way, downward, because the standard formulas were built mostly on Caucasian populations and tend to over-predict for these groups. The specific percentages are still estimates rather than a direct readout of any single study, and MacroMentor only offers the field for groups where published research backs a number, dropping options like Nordic and Pacific Islander rather than inventing one. Treat the nudge as a rough correction in a documented direction, not a settled figure, and enter a body-fat percentage if you have one, since that switches off the ancestry adjustment entirely in favor of a lean-mass formula.
What actually moves the number that matters
None of this is really about picking a winner. Every tool here, MacroMentor included, is fitting real physiology into a formula that lives on a web form, and even the oldest trick in the book has cracks in it. The classic "500 fewer calories a day equals a pound a week" math has been picked apart in the literature. A 2008 paper by Kevin Hall in the International Journal of Obesity modeled how the energy cost of continued weight loss shifts over time: as more of what's being lost comes from lean mass rather than fat, a fixed calorie deficit stops mapping onto a fixed rate of weight loss. Every calculator here is drawing a straight line through a curve. That's fine, as long as it's said out loud.
What's worth comparing across tools is simpler than which brand you trust: does it tell you which formula produced your number, and does it warn you when that number gets dangerously low.
